Commander says the Army is back in the Pacific

FORT SHAFTER, Hawaii –  The outgoing top Army commander in the Pacific says his service is back in the region after more than a decade of deploying soldiers to Afghanistan and Iraq.

Lt. Gen. Francis Wiercinski says all four brigades of the 25th Infantry Division based in Alaska and Hawaii are in the Pacific and aren't scheduled to go to the Middle East.

He says the I Corps command based in Washington state is refocusing on the Pacific region.

Wiercinski spoke Thursday about a month before he will hand over command of U.S. Army Pacific to Lt. Gen. Vincent Brooks on July 2.
